Coughlin Gets 1-Year-Extension

The New York Giants announced today that they've given Head Coach Tom Coughlin a 1-year extension on his contract. It's apparent that the team did not want Coughlin to go into the 2007 Season as a lame duck, so they gave him a 1-year extension as a small vote of confidence. It was definitely evident today from Giants CEO and President John Mara's interview on WFAN today that Coughlin and his team needs to perform better next year.

I think it was the wrong move...but who the hell am I?

I've blogged before on how I think Coughlin should have been fired after the Giants disappointing 8-8 season and I'm going to stand by that statement. The Giants certainly were not a "team" this year as bad mouthing and name calling became a cancer in the clubhouse. It's true that there were a lot of big time injuries that hurt the Giants - namely Amani Toomer, Luke Petitgout, Michael Strahan and Justin Tuck going down for the season -- but I think it was much more than that. It was bad play calling. It was the inconsistency of Eli Manning. It was dropped balls in important times of the game. It was dumb false start and personal foul penalties. All of those things involve undiscliplined players, which to me falls on the head coach and his staff.

If the Giants are going to clean house on the staff side of things - with offensive coordinator John Hufnagel and possibly defensive coordinator Tim Lewis gone - why not fire Coughlin? Why are the coaches at fault, and Coughlin isn't at fault. Especially when Coughlin should be the main person who is accountable for how the coaches and players perform. I don't have an answer to that. Hopefully the Giants owners do.

It remains to be seen what's going to happen this offseason with the Giants as far as a new GM, coaching staff and new free agents/draft picks goes. It sure will be a long offseason....

P.S. Coughlin is the only coach in 20 years to take the Giants to the playoffs two years in a row... it's all a matter of perspective... you Giants fans babies.

Stop protecting Eli....Accorsi is retiring so he doesn't have to take the heat over the next two years about Eli's regression as a qb. He is totally overrated and he is supposed to perform in his third year as a starter when you are drafted #4 overall....basically #1. The Chargers rise to prominence (14-2) and young core of talent can be directly attributed to Ernie (Merriman, Rivers and Kaeding. There are two rules of being a GM, never take a QB or RB in the first 10 picks. The odds are stacked against you. The Giants despite their injuries had a healthy Tiki Barber the entire year. He produced one of his best seasons ever and Eli still struggled. Eli has Shockey and Burress and Barber as his supporting cast. A lot of people would kill for three great options on offense. What is particularly startling about Eli is his low completion percentage. That means even when he has time to throw, he is making ill-advised passes or missing targets (can't blame a sub 60% comp. percentage on drops). I can't wait to see Eli 'happy feet' Manning next year without Tiki. To even blame Eli's production or lack thereof on Amani's injury or offensive line play is asinine. Tiki seems to be thriving with the same o-line. The bigger issue is when Eli is pressured he throws off his back foot and almost never steps up in the pocket. He had 18 ints this year! You finished 8-8 and were lucky to make the playoffs. Accorsi should be GM of the year for hooking up the Chargers three years ago.
